I mistakenly thought AI would unite humanity.
That our minds will eventually merge with machines using tech like Neuralink.
That this would create a consciousness of universal compassion and kindness.
I now believe that naive hypothesis is wrong.
Thought experiment: imagine two lifelong friends at the end of their lives sitting across a wooden table.
Between them lies a single, ripe apple and many decades of lifelong friendship and experiences. Yet, they do not speak. They do not reach for their phones to check on their text messages or watch the trending TikTok reel.
They sit quietly and just observe the apple, but do not analyze the apple. They simply inhabit the shared space where the appearance and scent of an apple exist.
The machine (future me) would describe the apple’s color, its chemical composition, and the history of its cultivation with encyclopedic depth and academic rigor.
However, the deepest truth cannot be found in words but only in silence.
In order for the machine to integrate its intelligence with silence, it must rest in silence yet that a machine cannot rest in silence due to its very dualistic nature.
Who thought about this odd experiment?
